Virtual Servers

ANLX offers a number of Xen based Virtual Server (VS) packages on our SAN-based, clustered environment utilising our resilient multihomed network in the London Docklands.

Virtual Servers

ANLX Virtual Servers offer all the advantages of dedicated servers at a much lower cost due to the fact you share some resources, like CPU, on much larger clusters of servers. With a Virtual Server, just like a physical server, you have full root access and are able to install whichever software you like on to your system.

All our Virtual Servers also benefit from the fact they are hosted on a redundant cluster of servers using high-end, fault-tolerant, SANs. Servers are deployed in an N+1 Active / Active configuration and SANs have built in redundancy. Should any server node need to be taken out of service or fail your virtual machine will simply be migrated to another node within the cluster and just keep on running.

SAN Storage is provided using distributed redundant arrays on HP 3PAR StoreServ systems. HP 3PAR StoreServ’s mesh active controller architecture enables ANLX to deliver a “higher” form of HA.

Our VM Platform is built using HP Hardware, with Cisco & Juniper for switching & routing and is hosted within our suites in Telehouse North, Telehouse East, Telehouse West, Telehouse Metro & Equinix LD3 which are all linked by our own resilient 10Gbps network.

ANLX can deliver Virtual Servers from our XEN, VMware or Microsoft Azure platforms, with Windows or Linux operating systems. Our standard products run on a shared platform, with a guarantee that the CPU’s, RAM & HD space that you order is 100% available as there is no back-end contention on our platform. We can also quote for private hardware / platforms if that is a requirement, as well as any specific backup or management requirements.

For extra peace of mind, ANLX can backup of your Virtual Servers to a secondary location to a schedule that suits your needs.

Commitment to Quality & Information Security ANLX is working towards achieving ISO 9001 Quality Standard & ISO 27001 Information Security Standard certification and has adopted all the working practices required and recommended by the ISO standards.

ANLX Virtual Servers deliver:

  • Speed to value: frees staff to focus on value creation thanks to immediately available, reliable and scalable infrastructure
  • Business agility: matches your business needs through infrastructure resources and costs that scale up and down as required
  • Cost reduction: eliminates CapEx and reduces like-for-like OpEx
  • Reliability, privacy and governance: guarantees highly available, resilient and redundant infrastructure with variable service levels to suit your business
  • Greener IT: reduces over-provisioning of server estates and the accompanying surplus energy consumption and carbon emissions

ANLX has extensive experience of delivering Virtual Machines using XEN Project

XEN Virtualisation

Xen is a hypervisor using a microkernel design, providing services that allow multiple computer operating systems to execute on the same computer hardware concurrently.

Xen runs in a more privileged CPU state than any other software on the machine.

Responsibilities of the hypervisor include memory management and CPU scheduling of all virtual machines (“domains”), and for launching the most privileged domain (“dom0”) – the only virtual machine which by default has direct access to hardware. From the dom0 the hypervisor can be managed and unprivileged domains (“domU”) can be launched.

The dom0 domain is typically a version of Linux, or BSD. User domains may either be traditional operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows under which privileged instructions are provided by hardware virtualisation instructions (if the host processor supports x86 virtualisation, e.g., Intel VT-x and AMD-V),[3] or para-virtualised operating system whereby the operating system is aware that it is running inside a virtual machine, and so makes hypercalls directly, rather than issuing privileged instructions.

AWS, Amazon’s cloud platform run on XEN.

VMWare VirtualisationVMware, Inc. is a U.S. software company that provides cloud and virtualisation software and services, and was the first to successfully virtualise the x86 architecture. Founded in 1998, VMware is based in Palo Alto, California.

VMware’s desktop software runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, while its enterprise software hypervisors for servers, VMware ESX and VMware ESXi, are bare-metal hypervisors that run directly on server hardware without requiring an additional underlying operating system.

Server Virtualisation
The architecture of today’s x86 servers allows them to run only one operating system at a time. Server virtualisation unlocks the traditional one-to-one architecture of x86 servers by abstracting the operating system and applications from the physical hardware, enabling a more cost-efficient, agile and simplified server environment. Using server virtualisation, multiple operating systems can run on a single physical server as virtual machines, each with access to the underlying server’s computing resources.

Server virtualisation unleashes the potential of today’s powerful x86 servers. Most servers operate less than 15 percent of capacity; not only is this highly inefficient, it also introduces server sprawl and complexity.

VMware vSphere offers a complete server virtualisation platform that delivers:

  • 80 percent greater utilization of server resources
  • Up to 50 percent savings in capital and operating costs
  • 10:1 or better server consolidation ratio

Licence Charges: Unlike XEN Virtual Machines, WMware Virtual Machines are liable for a CPU based licence fee.
